If you had to shop for either fruits or candy’s which one would you pick onto? 90% of us would pick on to candy bar unless we are fitness freaks

Both of them are sugary though, fruits contain healthier sugar and are loaded up with vitamins, minerals and fibre

Are Fruits Really That Healthy?

If you are striving for a healthy body there is no better alternative than fruits. National Dietary recommendations suggest that you eat a minimum of 2 different variants of fruits/day.

Choosing the right fruit

There is no single fruit that contains all the nutrients to fulfil the nutritional needs. Never do restrict yourself to one kind. Always prefer to have a rainbow of fruits

Reason being, fruits of same colour have similar protective compounds

Color of the fruits is good indication of the nutrients a particular fruits provide

  1. Red color fruits: Apples, cherries, watermelon, pomegranate are high in vitamin A & C
  2. Orange color fruits: Oranges, papaya, apricots are rich in nutrients like vitamin A, potassium, iron and zinc
  3. Yellow color fruits: Banana, Pineapple, Lemons, are good sources of potassium and vitamin C

Eat with the seasons

Have adequate amount of seasonal fruits. This is nature’s way of making sure your body gets a healthy mix of nutrients along with the phytochemicals.

Try Something New

If you have children who are fussy eaters try making some yummy smoothies, add fresh fruits to your cakes and muffins, add them as topping to your pizza or garnish fruits with chaat masala.

How to Have it the Right Way

Most of us prefer to have peeled fruits. But do, remember the best nutrients in a fruit are found in the inedible parts that are in the skin or just below the skin. Apples, Oranges, Pears, Peaches, Plums, and Kiwi have 25-38% higher antioxidants in their skin than the pulp portion. So this time, you’re having one eat it as a whole.

Avoid consuming them in the form of juices. When you eat a whole fruit, digestion begins from the mouth. Saliva contains digestive enzymes which helps breakdown the fruits and body absorbs the essential nutrients

In contrast when you consume fruit juices there is no breakdown by digestive enzymes thus prevents us from consuming the fibre fruits have

The only concern you need to watch out for is the timing of eating fruits. Avoid having citrus fruits on a empty stomach as it can cause acidity

People who are diabetic need to keep a check on the portion size of the fruits they consume as fruits are high in natural sugars
